Child Safety: A Commitment We Continue to Strengthen

Child Safety: A Commitment We Continue to Strengthen

At Faith Lutheran College Redlands, the safety and wellbeing of children has always been at the heart of who we are. Long before Child Safe Standards became a legislative requirement, our College community worked hard to create an environment where students could learn, grow, belong and flourish in a culture of care, respect and protection.

As a Christian school, we believe every child is created in the image of God and is deeply valued. This conviction shapes the way we care for our students, the relationships we build, and the expectations we set for ourselves as educators and caregivers. Child safety is not something we do simply because legislation requires it. It is part of our mission and responsibility as a school community.

That said, child safety is an area where no school can ever become complacent. Expectations continue to evolve, best practice continues to develop, and schools are expected to continually review and strengthen the systems they have in place. For this reason, we are continuing to refine and enhance our practices as we work towards full alignment with Queensland’s Child Safe Standards.

What Are the Child Safe Standards?

The Child Safe Standards are a framework designed to help organisations create environments where children are safe, valued, respected and empowered. They provide clear expectations for how organisations prevent harm, respond to concerns, and build cultures that place the safety and wellbeing of children at the centre of decision-making.

The standards cover areas such as leadership and governance, participation and empowerment of children, family engagement, equity and inclusion, recruitment and training of staff, responding to concerns, and continuous improvement.

Importantly, the standards are not intended to be a checklist that is completed once and forgotten. They are designed to promote ongoing reflection, review and improvement so that organisations continually strengthen their safeguarding practices.

Our Responsibilities as a College

As a school, we have significant legal and ethical responsibilities regarding the safety of children and young people in our care.

These responsibilities include creating safe physical and emotional environments, ensuring appropriate policies and procedures are in place, training staff, responding appropriately to concerns, and taking active steps to prevent harm before it occurs.

While schools have always carried these obligations, the Child Safe Standards provide a more structured framework for demonstrating how these responsibilities are being met and continually improved.

For us, compliance is only one part of the story. The greater goal is creating a culture where every student feels safe, known, respected and able to speak up if something is not right.

Building on Strong Foundations

One of the encouraging outcomes of a recent internal review has been the recognition that many aspects of the Child Safe Standards are already embedded within the life of our College.

Over many years, staff across all areas of the College have worked diligently to establish strong policies, support structures, wellbeing programs, reporting processes and safeguarding practices. Much of what the standards require aligns closely with approaches we have valued and implemented for a long time.

This should not come as a surprise. Schools that genuinely place student wellbeing at the centre of their work have often been implementing many child-safe practices well before formal standards were introduced.

However, meeting standards is not the same as stopping improvement. Child safety is an area that demands continual refinement, reflection and growth. Even where strong practices already exist, there is always more that can be done to strengthen systems, increase awareness and improve consistency.

Strengthening Our Approach

To support this ongoing work, Faith Lutheran College Redlands has established a cross-departmental Child Safeguarding Committee.

The Committee brings together staff from different areas of the College to review our practices against the Child Safe Standards, identify priorities for improvement, monitor progress and help guide future initiatives.

By involving representatives from across the College, we are able to draw on a wider range of perspectives and experiences while ensuring child safety remains a shared responsibility rather than the responsibility of any one individual or team.

The Committee’s work includes reviewing existing practices, considering emerging best practice, identifying opportunities for improvement and ensuring that child safety considerations continue to be embedded in everyday decision-making across the College.

This governance structure reflects our belief that safeguarding is most effective when it is owned collectively and supported by ongoing accountability.

What Parents Will See

As part of this work, families may begin noticing a greater visibility of child safety messaging across the College.

This includes the display of our Child Safety Commitment in classrooms and other learning spaces, greater visibility of safeguarding information on our website and digital platforms, communication with families about our commitment, and age-appropriate conversations with students about safety, respect and speaking up.

These initiatives are not about introducing something entirely new. Rather, they are about making visible and strengthening a commitment that has long been part of who we are as a College.

Looking Ahead

Child safety is not a destination that can be reached once and then set aside. It is an ongoing commitment to vigilance, learning and improvement.

We are proud of the work that has already been done at Faith Lutheran College Redlands and grateful for the dedication of staff who have contributed to creating a safe and supportive environment for students over many years. At the same time, we are committed to continuing this journey, refining our practices and ensuring our College remains aligned with contemporary expectations and best practice.

Most importantly, we remain committed to ensuring every child in our care feels safe, valued, heard and supported. That commitment sits at the centre of everything we do and will continue to guide us as we strengthen our approach to child safeguarding in the years ahead.
