FLAT (Faith Leaving a Trail)

Since 2010, Faith Lutheran College, Redlands and its local church congregation have developed a partnership with ‘Operation Vanuatu’ that has allowed student and staff groups to travel to Vanuatu. During these visits to Fokona Village, Faith students and staff have worked alongside local teachers and built school and medical facilities.

Head Heart Hands James 1:22-25

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.

Somewhere along the way the Service Learning moto of Head, Heart, Hands became a part of the FLAT team’s moto. It aptly highlights the action of God’s Spirit within a person. We hear God’s word, it speaks to our heart and then it is manifest in action. It has been a privilege to be a part of the FLAT team and to experience the excitement of serving others, particularly those of Fokona SDA school in Vanuatu. Our faith as it grows needs an outlet – an action. As James writes, it is good to hear God’s word and to reflect on it, to take it to heart, but there is the next level, which is the action. There is nothing more rewarding or enjoyable than using one’s gifts and talents to serve others, and they in turn appreciating your gestures.
