From Our Libraries T2 W6 2021

National Simultaneous Storytime … from space!

On May 19, as part of National Simultaneous Storytime, our Prep-Year 3 students all heard the story Give me some Space! by Philip Bunting read by a real-life astronaut from space! Now in its 21st year, this year’s event involved 1,939,596 readers across 31,696 locations. As well as seeing the book floating around in the International Space Station, students also enjoyed seeing our Library staff dressed as astronauts and the interactive displays created by Mrs Sells.

The Premier's Reading Challenge

All students in Prep to Year 9 are encouraged to participate in this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge. Reading record forms are available from the libraries on both campuses. Students have until August 27 to complete the challenge. Completed forms need to be returned to school on or before that date.

Chess

Last Tuesday we had 9 Secondary students represent the College at the Gardiner Chess Term 2 Secondary Interschool Competition. With almost 300 players in attendance, this was the largest event ever and so there were a few nerves! Students played 7 games throughout the course of the day, with many wins to be had. Emmanuel Quin received a ribbon in the A Division (4 wins and a draw). In the B Division, Jason Clissold (6 wins) received a medal for 2nd place in the individual standings, while Amy Murray (5 wins) achieved a ribbon.

Our B Division team, including Jason, Amy, Michael Reil and Kaden Richards came 3rd in the team event, all earning a medal. Congratulations to all 9 of our players, who also included Samuel Quin, Daniel Russell, Samuel McIntosh and Malachi Thomas. These results are a fantastic achievement considering that this was the first time most of these students had attended an interschool event. We’re looking forward to building on this in Term 3.

Any Secondary students who are interested in playing Chess can stay afterschool on Mondays (3:15-4:15) and play some friendly matches in the Lighthouse (no coach). Students should also keep an ear out for information about another in-school coaching day coming up early in Term 2.
