From Our Libraries T4 W2 2021

Book Fair – Junior School

We will be holding our annual Book Fair from October 25-28. Book Fair helps to support our school library, with a percentage of the proceeds coming back to us to use for books and library essentials. We thank The Events Committee for organising and supporting our Book Fair.

Students may bring home a ‘wish list’ during Book Fair, but there is no obligation to purchase books should you not wish to. Payment can be made by filling in the details on the back of the wish list and returning to school, or parents are able to visit to purchase before school from 8am and after school until 3:45pm. Visitors must sign in using the QLD Check-in App and wear a mask.

To promote Book Fair, students may enter a colouring-in competition. Students should have received a page to colour from school, extras are available from the office or library. The Events Committee has donated a $10 Book Fair voucher to the winner from each year level. Entries are due back to the library by Friday, October 22.

Chess – Junior School

It’s not too late to sign your child up for Chess Mates classes for Term 4. Classes are held in the library at lunchtime on Wednesdays. Designed especially for Prep and above and tailored by the teachers to suit the students in each class, the program is fun and interactive and will help improve many skills. Please see the attached flyer for more information and details on how to enrol your child.

Write a Book in a Day

Congratulations to Lauren, Millie, Jackson, Libbi, Summer, Archer, Tommi, Amelia, Mischa, Abigail, Stella and Hannah, all from Year 5, on completing the Write a book in a day challenge during the last week of Term 3. This fun, creative and collaborative competition for students in Years 5 to 12 has been running for the past 10 years. Teams of up to ten have just a day to write and illustrate a book from start to finish. To make it even more fun, unique parameters must be included in the story. Digital editions of the completed stories are made available in an online library and shared with children in hospitals across Australia.

The challenge supports the Kids Cancer Project. Entry fees go towards the cause and students are also invited to raise further funds through sponsorship. Our teams raised over $2400 on their sponsorship pages – an amazing effort, congratulations! A huge thank you to the family and friends who supported our students with this. Some keen students have already been asking if we are going to do it again next year!

eSports

Our little eSports program has been gaining momentum in recent weeks.

Towards the end of Term 3 we had Year 5/6 and Year 7/8 teams represent the College in a competition called Fuse Cup. Games for this competition are played on the Nintendo Switch, with a different game each term (1-3). Students competed in pairs in Rocket League and were excited to reach quarter finals and semi-finals in the respective competitions. We are looking forward to continuing practice this term in readiness for different games next year.

Our Year 9-12 eSports team competed in a round of the QUT High School eSports League on the last day of Term 3 in at QUT’s purpose-built eSports arena. The team played three different games against another school during the day and we were lucky enough to be declared the winners of the day! The QUT High School eSports League supports the principles of fair play, respect, responsibility and eSafety and is not just for gamers. Students who are interested in aspects such as broadcasting and officiating events are able to participate in these roles as well. Many of them enjoyed wearing the headphones and getting behind the camera to commentate on games throughout the day.

Last Saturday we had a small team of Year 10 students represent us as the QUT High School eSports League 2022 season launch at Nissan Arena. With over 20 schools in attendance, this was the largest High School eSports event ever held in Queensland. A great experience for those students!

Lighthouse Café - Secondary School

Canteen staff sell breakfast items at the Lighthouse Café on the Secondary Campus each morning between 7:50am and 8:25am. An excellent option for students coming to school early for training or rehearsals!

Homework Club – Secondary School

A teacher is available in the Lighthouse from 3:10pm-4:25pm on Monday and Thursday afternoons for basic tutoring / help with homework. Students who wish to attend must go straight to the Lighthouse after school and sign in. At the end of tutoring, students should be picked-up from the top carpark or make their way home using other modes of transport.

Britannica School

All students are able to access Britannica School for their research needs. They can access the links for this without further passwords when signed into Student Central or Oliver Library.
