Service Learning

Secondary School Service

Service happens at Faith in variety of ways including ministry, worship, fundraising, community and service projects. Some of this extends to Service Learning. Authentic links to the formal curriculum are encouraged although service learning need not necessarily be in the formal curriculum to achieve the desired service learning outcomes and principles.

Across all year levels of College life the opportunity to serve and to learn through service is encouraged and facilitated through planned initiatives. The College has a long standing relationship with community groups (particularly the Qld Cancer Council) and engages in fundraising opportunities in support of a range of community groups. Younger students are encouraged to serve others within their local community including service in their classrooms and at home. As students grow through service and develop greater capacity to work alongside others, they are given opportunities to engage in national and international service and service learning opportunities. Many of these opportunities to learn are supported through Australian Lutheran World Service initiatives and resources.

Since 2010, Faith Lutheran College, Redlands and its local church congregation have developed a partnerships with ‘Operation Vanuatu’ that has allowed student and staff groups to travel to Vanuatu. During these visits to Fokona Village, Faith students and staff have worked alongside local teachers and built school and medical facilities. The College is also developing opportunities to work more closely with indigenous communities locally and through Fink River Mission in Central Australia.

The College Vision Statement regarding Christian Service to the Community states:

Faith Lutheran College, Redlands will challenge the school community to develop a compassionate understanding of active Christian service. Armed with this understanding, Faith Lutheran College, Redlands aims for its community to develop a consciousness of the welfare needs and issues in our Redlands community, in Australia and overseas with the purpose of practically serving Christ by actively responding through “hands-on” ministry. This Christian service will include aspects of service pertaining to our environment and the gifts of God’s wonderful creation.

2 Timothy 4:5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
